The Cellar

The Cellar is a large area featuring numerous displays of local trades. There is a large soapstone sink surrounded by churns, testers, separators, and other early dairy tools. There is also a blacksmith exhibit with a coal bin forge and anvil tongs. The shoe maker exhibit has numerous items from the Civil War era. Numerous traps for fur trapping, broom maker tools, honey and maple sugar processing equipment are also here.

The coopers section has adzes, augers, draw shaves and a "shingle horse" for holding materials while shaving. There is a carpenter's chest with approximately 80 planes for special jobs. Also of note, is the handcrafted personal tool chest of Isaac Plumb, a cabinet maker of Sherburne from the early 1860's.

Many other tools can be found here such as; saws, axes, tools for cutting cord wood, and devices for getting water from a deep well and for ice cutting. There is also a large storage barrel made by hallowing out a log section, inserting a bottom, and using a buttermilk based iron-oxide paint to finish it, dated from 1843.

In yet another area, display cases show the development of the radio, telephones, business machines, and cameras. Also in the section, are displays of Dr. Lee's office furniture, a dental office, a hairdresser, a barber shop, and watch maker, Mr. Cheydkeur.

There is also a Norwich Pharmacy exhibit located in the cellar, however, much more can be found a the Norwich Pharmaceutical Museum located at the Eaton Center.
